FINCB is a Public Institute of research, diagnosis and care under Ministry of Health and of Region Lombardia.

It is a national and international referral point in the fields of neurology, neurosurgery and neuroscience. It carries out research on child neurology, epilepsy, neuro-oncology, neuro-rehabilitation, public health and disability research, genetic diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, neuromuscular and neurodegenerative disorders.

The “Neurology, Public Health and Disability” Unit is engaged in the implementation of the ICF and related instruments at national and international levels as well as in the development of strategic planning and policy recommendations in the field of public health and disability for the Italian Ministries. The unit has wide experience and thorough knowledge of ICF and its use in clinical settings, in particular in brain research as well as in cross-sectional and longitudinal surveys and in policy support. Since 2007 it has been a WHO Collaborating Centre Research Branch for the family of International Classifications. Is providing expertise for the WHO Disability and Rehabilitation Unit and for UN Convention on Rights of people with Disability Monitoring in several countries. The Unit is also coordinating the COMA RESEARCH CENTRE of Besta institute in collaboration with several departments and numerous Italian centers of rehabilitation and long term care.

The UNIT has wide experience in coordinating FP6, FP7 and Horizon 2020 EU projects in the field of research on Public Health and Disability, ageing, burden of neurological disorders and on policy development (EU-MHADIE, MURINET, COURAGE in EUROPE, PARADISE, MARATONE, ATHLOS, PATHWAYS Projects) as well as on national research on surveys and statistics and on collection of national and international health, functioning and disability data.

Dr. Matilde Leonardi

Matilde Leonardi Photo Neurologist, paediatrician, neonatologist, child neurologist. Specialized in Bioethics. At Neurological Institute Besta is developing and carrying out research projects related to neurology, disability, ageing, public health, ICF (WHO’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health) neurorehabilitation and burden of neurological disorders. Scientific Director of the Coma Research Centre of the Institute Besta. WHO expert on disability, and on monitoring disability in emergencies, member of the WHO-FIC (Family of International Classifications) Functioning and Disability Reference Group and Director of the Italian WHO Collaborating Centre Research Branch. Since 1995, she has been working on ICF development and implementation co-chair of the WHO ICF children’s group for ICF-CY children’s version development. She has been the coordinator of ICF IN LABOUR SECTOR national project. Coordinator and partner of several, EU and non EU-funded research projects. Consultant on public health, UNCRPD monitoring and disability policy development for several European and extra European Governments. Expert for the European Commission on public health, ageing, disability and neurosciences. Professor on annual contracts of Neuropsychiatric Aspects of Disability and member since 2007 of the Board of Directors of the Bioethics Centre at the Catholic University of Milan. In 2014 passed the national evaluation as Associate Professor of Neurology and as Associate and Full Professor of rehabilitation. From 2010 to 2013 appointed by the Italian Government as President of the Scientific Committee of the National Observatory on Disability, monitoring UNCRPD. In November 2011 appointed as corresponding member of the Pontificia Academia Pro Vita. European Brain Council Founder, EBC-WHO liaison. Member of several international scientific societies as EFRR, WFNR, EAN.

 

Chiara Scaratti

Chiara Scaratti Photo Psychologist, researcher at FINCB’s Neurology, Public Health & Disability Unit, with experience on evaluation of neurological and neurosurgical patients and impact of neurological conditions on work outcomes. Authors of several papers in the area of burden of neurological disorders, psychological impact of chronic diseases. Expert in scientific literature review and in project writing and monitoring.
